Chapter 9
Anyone who saw Dr. Akira Yoshida's mane of long white hair might have thought first of an orchestra conductor. Indeed, the chief of staff at Miki Sato's hospital, a small institution that catered primarily to those on some form of government assistance, did at times think of himself as a person who tried to keep all sections of his facility in tune and on time. It made little difference that he wore a white coat instead of black tails and did not possess a baton. What was on his mind that afternoon was Dr. Miki Sato's sudden, wholly unexpected stroke.
He believed that a doctor who suffered a stroke during a meeting with other doctors present had nothing short of the best of luck. But now he found himself impatiently waiting for Dr. Sato's husband. He had met the man several times before and Yoshida liked what he saw, but he did not like waiting, and he did not like the chore in front of him. As chief, though, he did not think it was anyone else's duty but his to inform Dr. Sato's husband about what had happened.
